Years 3 and 4 Core Classes

This term we have been researching Olympic sports. We found out when our chosen sports were included in the Olympics, which countries won, what skills an athlete needs to be competitive, how the scoring works for our chosen sport, and where the sport was held. We also had to say why we chose to research that sport. Here are some examples of our info boards....

The creative activity for this term involved designing some events for an "Animal Olympics."
We used kidpix to present these. (These are not yet completed but will appear on this blog soon).

Term 3, Year 5 Core GATE

This term we completed our project for the Transpower Competition. We worked with an engineer, Jimmy Ho, on designing a new bike storage area. The entire project has been sent to Wellington for evaluation. Here are some photos of us during the project...

Core Groups Years 3 and 4

This term we have been studying crystals. We began by growing some salt crystals.
Then we grew some copper sulphate crystals. Here are some that Jeremy grew at home.

For the creative aspect of our topic we could choose an activity. Some of us designed board games and some of us made treasure maps. We invited friends to trial our games and maps.

This term we have been looking at hair. We have researched interesting facts, conducted experiments and looked at different hair under a microscope.
Here we are researching some "big questions" about hair.
I liked doing the science experiments and using the digital microscope. Watalu.
I liked the experiment where we measured Anni's hair when it was dry and when it was wet. Savahna.
I liked testing how strong hair is using weights. Daniel.
I liked doing the experiment to see how fast our hair grows. We will measure it all year. Joyce.

Core Year 5 GATE

We have decided on "Problems with the Bike Stand" as our project this year for the Transpower Neighbourhood Competition. We met our engineer, Jimmy Ho. He is an ex-pupil of SNS and specialises in Transport Engineering.

The 2012 Future Problem Solving Group

This term we have been looking at possible future problems in the work force due to technological and societal changes.

Welcome to GATE 2012!

We have a busy and exciting year ahead.
The Core Years 3 and 4 classes will begin the year by investigating the topic of "Our Hair," its growth and change, purpose and different forms.
The Core Year 5 group will firstly look at activities to encourage "thinking outside the square." They will then take part in the Transpower Competition, working with an engineer on a project that has yet to be decided.
The Core Year 6 group will be busy investigating problems set by the NZ Problem Solving Programme. The first topic for the year is "All in a Day's Work," looking at the effects of technology and globalisation. (For more information see fpsnz.co.nz).
The Philosophy groups will continue to discuss big questions, such as friendship and honesty.

We look forward to sharing our ideas with you and reading your feedback.
